Solution-Focused Therapy
Our beliefs (usually held subconsciously and out of our awareness) control our thoughts, feelings, moods and actions. Usually these beliefs were created when we were much younger and they got us through a tough time. Now we're older, wiser, more powerful and focused on living a rich and productive life. Updating our beliefs about ourselves and the world we live in, and updating the strategies we use to create that rich and productive life go a long way toward creating the life we want. It's surprising how much depression and anxiety stems from these old beliefs!
With trauma and PTSD, having once been in a dangerous situation, we now can't let go of the fear and foreboding that it might happen again at any time. In fact, a primary component in resolving trauma and PTSD involves letting the parts of us that think we're about to die know that we've survived and that we're safe now. As an added bonus, addressing the trauma and PTSD usually also addresses concurrent depression and anxiety.
When we're grieving, we're focused on what we've lost. (As with trauma and PTSD, anxiety and depression are frequently felt and sometimes misdiagnosed.) As we go through a grieving process, we balance that with the good memories and the wonderful possibilities that still exist as our lives continue.
When we take charge and change the beliefs we're operating from, we also take charge of our thoughts, feelings, moods and actions. We take charge of our lives. In doing so, we leave behind much of the depression and anxiety, and drama of our past; we release the trauma and PTSD. We begin to reveal our potential and achieve our dreams and aspirations.
